Meet Tamsyn Dexter, your Biogen Face of Fitness Finalist 2021

Tamsyn celebrates what her body is capable of, and remembers to be grateful for the progress she has made. “You can only take one step at a time, but every step counts.”

My family environment growing up had always been about fitness and health.

I competed in many sports at national and international levels. I’d say my real passion for fitness ignited when I was 16 and decided I wanted to dance and perform as a career. It was at this age that I started to understand and listen to my body. I learnt what my body needed mentally, physically and from a nutritional point of view to perform my best on stage. I then developed an interest in stretching, contortion and aerial, which has brought a different dimension to my performing and fitness journey.

I wouldn’t be the dancer, aerialist, performer, or person I am today without a consistent fitness regimen.

My day revolves around pushing myself both physically and mentally. In that way, my life has changed as fitness has encouraged me to become more determined and mentally strong to accomplish all my goals, both inside and outside the gym.

Be consistent.

You want to reach the point where training isn’t an effort. You should train because you want to not because you have to. My approach to fitness is simply about consistently moving your body and living a healthy lifestyle. My philosophy is to be grateful for what my body is capable of and to appreciate the progress I have made.

I train every day.

My body needs to move daily to be the happiest I can be. My fitness regimen varies from HIIT workouts, Pilates, traditional strength training and hiking. My stage performance training includes dancing, aerial and stretch/contortion. Since I live a very physically demanding lifestyle, it is important to listen to my body to determine what form of activity is needed daily and when I need to rest or recover to keep my body feeling healthy and happy.

Train outdoors whenever possible!

Activities outside have many physical and mental benefits. But, in all honestly, I just love training in the sun, hearing the birds chirp and admiring the vibrant colours.

With the amount of physical activity I do daily, I need something that aids recovery.

My go-to supplement is Biogen Magnesium Chelate. It helps combat body fatigue, muscles soreness or stiffness and to prevent muscle cramps.

Stop letting your potential go to waste because you are not confident.

“People with half your talents are making serious waves just because they decided to start!” I have this quote on my mirror and read it every day. Fear can rule your life and stop you from reaching your full potential. So, I encourage myself to do something that challenges and scares me. I want to grow and keep bettering myself daily, and you can only do that by stepping out of your comfort zone. This was one of the reasons why I entered the Biogen Face of Fitness this year.

If you find your passion, your purpose in life will follow.

I’m a huge advocate for pursuing passions, I know your passion can be scary, unconventional and against social norms, but you have to do what sets your soul on fire. You can have so much power over your life if you choose to focus on what excites you. By following your passion, you will inspire those around you, and by honouring your calling, success will follow.
