International athletes dominate 2019 FICT

The South African CrossFit community had high hopes of a local upset at this weekend’s CrossFit Fittest in Cape Town (FICT) sanctionedinvitational qualifier, but the experience and prowess of the international athletes who travelled to the Mother City proved too much.

On the hunt for a spot at the CrossFit Games in August, a number of big names from across the globe flew in to South Africa for the 3-day competition, hosted at the Green Point Athletics Stadium from 31 January to 2 February.

There were, however, a few secret off-site locations included in the schedule, and a team beach WOD on Clifton 4th beach. Organisers delivered a true test of strength, skill and fitness with a combination of outdoor events and classic CrossFit benchmark workouts, along with a few unknowns to keep athletes on their toes.

After an action-packed weekend, it was American and 2-times Games athlete Sean Sweeney, Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir, the 2015 and 2016 Fittest Woman on Earth from Iceland, and Holland’s CrossFit Vondelgym that secured their spots at the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games.

The weekend’s best-placed local athletes were team Jacked Rebels. The team included SA’s fittest woman, Celestie Engelbrecht, two former members from the CrossFit PBM team that competed at the Games in 2018, and Mary Jamieson who has competed in 5 previous Regionals events.
