With her busy lifestyle Jenna Shanks didn’t have much free time to train and soon she found herself in a weight-gain spiral where the scale was moving farther in the wrong direction every time she stepped on it.“I started wearing wrap skirts and dresses to hide the bumps.
But when I looked in the mirror with no clothes on there was no place to hide the truth. The reflection I saw was very depressing.”Jenna’s brother, Richard, had successfully completed the Supashape 12-Week Transformation Challenge before and she started to wonder if it could have the same impact on her life. “Richard achieved amazing results in those 12 weeks, so much so that he won that challenge. I was in awe of what he achieved and wanted to emulate his success. He suggested that he should enter me into the next challenge as a Christmas present – there is nothing quite like your brother hinting that you need to lose weight to get you motivated.”In February the following year Jenna began her 12-week challenge under the guidance of coach Andrew Hudson, who gave her an eating plan and a training programme to follow. “I didn’t see any changes or improvements from week to week, but then you see a friend who you haven’t seen in a while and they are shocked at how much weight you’ve lost and comment on how healthy you’re looking. That was the best form of motivation for me, and it kept me going through the challenging times.”
The advice she gives to anyone who is thinking about taking on a transformation challenge is to jump in and just do it. “Don’t think about it. Just take it one workout at a time, one day at a time, and before you know it you’ll have transformed your body and mind. This challenge is a metaphor for life. If you want to achieve something have a goal, get a plan, then go do it!”
Top diet tip: Drink lots of water – 4 to 5 litres a day. Don’t snack! Eat vegetables like mushrooms which contain few calories but fill you up. And avoid sugar!
