South African athlete Charné Bosman, has won the Comrades marathon 2016.
It was a close call for the top two female runners who crossed the finish line at this year’s Comrades. Defending champion, Caroline Wostmann, was in the lead and looked set to take the title for the second time but experienced problems in the closing stages of the race. To make matters worse the runner was nearly hit by a motorbike. But, it was Charné Bosman who overtook Wostmann in the last few kilometers of the race. Bosman, who had been about 11 minutes adrift at one stage, finished strongly and overtook Wostmann – who was forced to walk- with just 2km to go to the finish line at the Kingsmead Stadium.
Charné Bosman finished in a time of 6:25.55. Caroline Wostmann came second in the women’s race in a time of 6:30,43 and Kajsa Berg from Sweden finished in third place.
