Africa’s Strongest Woman, Brendali Theron – #StrongWomen

From teaching yoga to breaking records (like pulling a plane) – Africa Strongwoman Brendali Theron is the very definition of a strong woman – physically and mentally!

Tell us more about yourself and your journey so far.

I am 26 years old and from Johannesburg. I am a full-time graphic designer, and after hours I instruct yoga and suspension yoga classes, as well as host a few group fitness classes. I recently started my studies toward my diploma in Sports Nutrition, as I have a love for sports and know that nutrition is very important to achieving your goals. I alDiplomated my diploma in Health and Fitness and an additional diploma in Photography. I am following my passion in life and I love to inspire and motivate the people around me.

Last year I won the Winter 12 Week Transformation RippedFreak Challenge – this was a big motivating factor for me towards my journey in the fitness industry. After this challenge, I started to train to become a Strongwomen athlete. My first competition was the Africa qualifiers where I placed 1st and trained for a solid 3 months towards Africa’s Strongest in November 2016. When the time came, eventually all my hard work paid off and I won. I am currently Africas Strongest women U75. By winning my division in November 2016, I pre-qualified for the Arnold Classic in South Africa 5-7 May 2017. It was my first international amateur competition that I was privileged to enter and I took first place, with the new African record for log press at 80kg. Winning this competition automatically qualified me for Ohio World Championships in March 2018. There are a few more competitions left for 2017: Asia, Hong Kong – 18-20 August 2017 (still deciding whether to take place) and then Europe, 22-24 September 2017. I think this opportunity is amazing and I feel very privileged to represent my country on an international level.

My goal is to take part in another Arnold Classic, this would be one of my biggest dreams come true; to represent the Southern Hemisphere as a Strong Athlete.

Tell us more about your plane-pulling event.

What an amazing, fun. Artisticfit day! My coach and I thought that we need to be giving something back to show how blessed we are and how much we have to be grateful for. So on  Sunday, 28th May 2017 at Lanseria Airport, I was the first lightweight women in Africa to pull an Embraer 120 aircraft. For every meter I managed to pull, the aircraft businesses donated R750 per meter for the first 30m towards the charity Jumping Kids.

Jumping Kids was launched in 2009 by Johan Snyders with the dream of supplying the latest prosthetic limb technology to children. He became aware of the thousands of children living with amputations without access to adequate prostheses or rehabilitation. Recognizing the opportunity for development, the Jumping Kids Prosthetic Fund was born. Jumping Kids is a registered not-profit that provides prosthetic solutions and rehabilitation encouraging these children to become athletes in their fields and giving them dreams towards an active, healthy life no matter the circumstances.

I managed to pull the Aircraft for 54m and the event was very successful. It was amazing to see how many people support you and just help out for the love of the sport and to be a part of a good cause.

Who inspires you to be strong?

My COACH! – My Coach, Robin Du Toit, is the strongest human I know. We have been walking a journey for 5 years and he has taught me to be mentally and physically strong, no matter what life throws at me. You need to remember that all that matters is how you react to what happens to you; that is how you build your character. He has the ability to make you believe in yourself, to truly become or achieve anything. If your mindset is correct and if you devote 100% towards achieving your dream you’ll reach it. He changes the lives of everyone and anyone who crosses his path, he has a good heart and he tries to help where he can; always giving back more and more. Robin is my inspiration to be strong, my passion still overflows to represent being a #strongwomen, to inspire and motivate all those around me on a daily basis to be the best version of themselves each and every day, filling this world with hope.

Who do you nominate as your #strongwomen?

Without a second thought – Jenadine Havenga. This girl sets an example of achieving whatever you want most in life. And no matter what obstacles you may face, don’t make excuses. Fix your eyes on the prize and go and get it! Be hungry and strong enough, and you will do whatever it takes to get it – stay humble and work hard!

A #strongwomen looks a challenge dead in the eye and gives it a wink.

Don’t ever let doubt smother your dreams; believe in yourself and work hard, stay humble and life will be wonderful and filled with happiness!
